I am now a deep fried flower eater

Tuscan Town Trotter: Part 1
We are quickly coming to the end of our Italian adventures, amici.  So in order to get in the most Tuscany in the shortest amount of time, we have been hopping on weekend trains to neighboring towns.  These quick little day trips will be documented as part of the short Tuscan Town Trotter series.  Enjoy!

Looks good, huh?  Can you guess what is is?  If you said a cheese-filled, battered, deep fried squash blossom of awesomeness then you guessed right!  Did you even know that you can eat some flowers?  Now, I don't think it is very smart to go through your mom's flower garden and start sampling the roses and petunias, but some flowers, like these squash blossoms, are very much edible and also very tasty!  We were pretty hungry when we arrived in Montalcino and this little restaurant sure hit the spot.

Lunch was followed by a walk through a small market area.  The vendors were selling honeys, jewelery, olive oils, and truffles (the tuber not the treat).  While we were there we had to try out some of the goods - and they were good!

Now what did we do after the market...oh yeah, more food!  We stopped by a little shop just outside of a small medieval palace on the north end of town to sample some of their local cheeses and honey.

At this point we were ready for a food break - and I was ready for a food nap!  As you can see below, I was nodding off during a photo shoot.

We stopped along the edge of town and had a sit on some benches overlooking the Tuscan countryside.  Che bella (how beautiful)!

How relaxing!  We wandered around a bit and found a soccer field but guess what?  It was completely empty!  No one was playing that day.  Too bad, it would have been the perfect day for a friendly 3-on-3 match.  Maybe Nic, Toby and Brenden vs. Logan, Austyn and Landon?  I would have stayed safely off to the side and kept score.  That is one thing about Italy - and Europe in general - they are just crazy about soccer.  Except that here they call it football, which I guess makes more sense because you play it by kicking a ball around with your feet.  How did American football get to be called football?  You barely even touch the ball with your feet in that crazy game!  I guess I'll have to ask Jacob or Holly since they are both football and soccer fans.

We sure packed a lot of fun into one day in Montalcino (although most of it was food-related like usual)!  Time to hop back on the bus back home to Siena to start planning our next day trip.  Ciao ciao, Montalcino!
